2017 Special 301 Out-of-Cycle Review of Notorious Markets

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) annually releases its Special 301 Report on the adequacy and effectiveness of IP rights protection by U.S. trading partners. Conducted under the auspices of the Special 301 program, the 2017 Notorious Markets List identifies online and physical marketplaces that reportedly engage in and facilitate substantial copyright piracy and trademark counterfeiting. ASOP Global submitted comments in response to USTR’s request for “examples of online and physical notorious markets, including foreign trade zones that allegedly facilitate substantial trademark counterfeiting and copyright piracy.”

Best Practice Sharing Workshop

The Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies (ASOP Global) and the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacy (ASOP EU) hosted the fifth Best Practice Sharing Workshop in Paris, France on June 29. ASOP Global’s Executive Director, Libby Baney, ASOP EU’s Mike Isles and Klaus Gritschneder, and NABP’s Policy and Communications Director, Melissa Madigan were joined by 20 EU member states and not-for-profit organizations where they discussed the need for more public awareness programs about falsified medicines like those previously conducted by ASOP Global in the U.S. and ASOP EU, as well as the “Common Logo”, which must appear on every online pharmacy selling medicine in Europe, and the latest progress relating to NABP’s .pharmacy top level domain (TLD) initiative.

Guse, and Perry Eisenschmid, CEO of the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) hosted the Canadian Online Pharmacies Forum during the 2017 Canadian Pharmacists Conference, which was co-sponsored by CPhA and the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada (AFPC) from June 2-5 in Quebec City. More than 700 pharmacists and pharmacy stakeholders attended the conference where they discussed key issues facing Canada’s healthcare system, including the opioid crisis, mental healthcare and antimicrobial stewardship.

Tell Congress To Keep Our Medicines Safe

Congress is set to consider new legislation that would legalize importation of prescription medicines from foreign countries outside the jurisdiction of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Such a policy would put Americans at increased risk of receiving counterfeit or otherwise unsafe medications, including controlled substances offered by illegal foreign online pharmacies without a prescription, contributing to the opioid epidemic in the U.S.
