ASOP Global Honors Sens. Feinstein and Portman for Efforts to Protect Patients Online
WASHINGTON, DC (November 15, 2018) – At a Capitol Hill reception today the nonprofit Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies (ASOP Global) awarded Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) the organization’s annual ASOP Global Patient Safety Champion Award and STOP Act Champion Award, respectively.
“We are proud to recognize Senators Feinstein and Portman for their tireless efforts to protect consumers from bad actors illegally selling opioids and other prescription drugs online,” Libby Baney, principal at Faegre Baker Daniels Consulting and senior advisor to ASOP Global said. “We commend their leadership in combatting illegal online drug sellers and thank them for being champions for patient safety.”
For more than ten years, Senator Feinstein has fought for a safer Internet for consumers, introducing numerous bills calling for stricter online pharmacy regulation. In February 2018, as co-chair of the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control and Ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, she led a bipartisan group of colleagues in issuing letters in calling for major internet companies to remove illegal online drug sales from their platforms.
“Sen. Feinstein is a critical voice for public health issues and committed advocate for protecting patients from illegal online drug sellers,” Baney said.
As chair of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations and a stalwart advocate in the fight against the opioid epidemic, Senator Rob Portman championed the STOP Act which will help curb the flow of shipments containing illegal prescription and synthetic drugs and illicit substances from rogue online pharmacies into the country through the U.S. Postal System.
“Through his unwavering efforts to get the STOP Act passed, Sen. Portman has helped prevent hundreds of packages containing potentially deadly opioids and counterfeit prescription drugs from entering the United States and getting into the hands of unsuspecting Americans during the height of ongoing opioid epidemic,” Baney said.
