ASOP Global Statement On Launch Of Amazon Pharmacy

Washington (November 17, 2020) – In response to the launch today of Amazon Pharmacy, the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies (ASOP Global), issued the following statement:

ASOP Global welcomes the move by Amazon to expand patient and caregiver access to safe, affordable medicines through its new online pharmacy platform. While we are encouraged to see the entrance of a legitimate online pharmacy marketplace, the fact remains that the vast majority of internet drug sellers operate illegally, peddling dangerous – even deadly – fake medicine to unsuspecting patients and putting their health at risk. Risks still remain to consumers who look to the internet unknowingly for access to prescription drugs and other healthcare services.

A recent national survey commissioned by ASOP Global makes it clear that the COVID-19 pandemic is accelerating an already growing trend toward the digitalization of the healthcare industry, including the purchase of medications online. The poll also shows that most Americans do not understand the prevalence of illegal online pharmacies and are unaware of the risks associated with their use or how to identify or differentiate safe sources from illicit websites. Meanwhile, criminals have rushed to exploit coronavirus fears through thousands of new malicious websites that push counterfeit cures and treatments or misinformation. All these factors combined create a perfect storm for elevating the threat to consumer safety online.

As Americans increasingly continue to buy medicines via the internet, public health leaders, healthcare professionals, policymakers – and technology companies – must remain aware of the risks associated with illegal online drug sellers and take action to protect patients online. The growth of this industry sector underscores the need to highlight available resources on how to appropriately utilize online pharmacies, and to ensure public health and safety online and off.

ASOP Global provides free tools and resources to help consumers learn more about how to stay safe and save money buying medicines online.
